For all those who have been cramped in coach and can't afford the upgrade to business or first class, there is another option which surprisingly works 75% of the time for me. Secret is, just simply ask and be nice when at the ticket counter. Reason why these spaces are open is because the carrier would rather like to know who will be sitting in those seats. As long as you understand the instructions and can communicate with the crew then you're solid. If you have children you will not be able sit at these seats. Now go get your seats!

When traveling, sometimes you will be approached by timeshare reps to ask you to attend a presentation. They usually indicate some sort of compensation for you time. It could be several hundreds in cash gift to some type of recreation package or coupons. The presentation shouldn't take longer than 1-2 hours. Once you say no to it, take your gift and you're free to go. If they aren't offering any gifts, I just say no thanks. Each time I go to Hawaii or some type of ski resort, they will approach me for this offer. I jump on it right away.

Trips To More Than 20 Destinations, Including 4 'Mystery' Getaways Vacation Packages Going On eBay
NEW YORK (AP) ― JetBlue Airways Corp. is auctioning off more than 300 roundtrip flights and six vacation packages this week on eBay, with opening bids set between 5 and 10 cents.

The flights are to more than 20 destinations, including four "mystery" JetBlue Getaways Vacation packages to undisclosed locations.

The three-, five- and seven-day auctions include one- and two-person roundtrip, weekend flights in September from cities including Boston, Chicago, New York, Orlando, Salt Lake City, Fort Lauderdale and Southern California.

Harlan Platt, a finance professor at Northeastern University who follows the airline industry, thinks the auctions will provide some valuable "word-of-mouth" advertising for the discount carrier.

"I think it's a great idea. In this day and age, people are inundated with ads as they are sitting on airplanes, or at airports," he said. "A subtle advertisement such as this could be very effective."

Platt said the auctions will likely produce final bids between 85 percent and 90 percent of the flight or package's total value.

"It's all about the cost of getting someone to notice you," he said. "And this (method) provides a lot of bang for the buck."

Each auction will have a specific range of dates in which customers can travel. The travel dates, times and flight numbers will be posted when the customers bid.

The vacation packages include airfare and a four-night hotel stay for two at Marriott hotels in locations including Las Vegas and Nassau, Bahamas. The four mystery packages include two locations where passports are needed and two that don't require passports.

Taxes and fees are additional and will vary according to the particular route, but they will be disclosed in each listing, according to JetBlue spokeswoman Alison Eshelman. Bidders will need to have a PayPal account.

Flights leave on Thursdays or Fridays and return on Sundays or Mondays. All travel must be completed by October 6.

A surprise fee for my hotel room

(Tribune Media Services) -- Ilene Coffey's room at an Orlando hotel comes with an unexpected surprise: a $50 fee for a "short stay." When she protests, her hotel and online travel agency tell her she must pay. What's worse, she can't back out -- if she does, her credit card will be charged for the stay. Is there a way out of this mess?

Q: I recently found a surprise fee on my hotel bill, and I'm having absolutely no success in getting it removed. Maybe you can help me.
I booked a room at the Blue Heron Beach Resort in Orlando through Orbitz. When I checked in, I was told there would be a $50 surcharge because of my short stay.
I showed the hotel my confirmation, which only said I would have to pay a $5-a-day resort fee. That didn't work. I phoned Orbitz, and it insisted the fee had been revealed on its site -- all I needed to do was "right-click several times."
So I said fine, just cancel the reservation. But it was too late -- an Orbitz representative said I would be charged for the rooms even if I didn't stay at the Blue Heron. I wrote to Orbitz after I got back home, but have heard nothing. Is there anything you can do?

A: How can any hotel expect you to pay a fee that it doesn't tell you about? And by "tell you" I mean that it shows the fee clearly through every booking channel, including an online travel agency like Orbitz.
Right click several times? Come on. I looked at the confirmation Orbitz sent you, and there's no sign of a $50 fee. Let me be clear about this: This isn't to say the Blue Heron or Orbitz shouldn't be charging you an extra $50. If they told you about the charge, and you agreed to it, they're well within their rights to ask you to pay.
I just don't think it's right to surprise you with an additional fee -- and then to tell you you'll be charged for the room if you back out.
So what was the fee for? It hardly matters. Hotels add surcharges for early and late checkout, for extra guests or for resort amenities. These fees are tacked on to your base room rate, giving you the impression that your room is cheaper than it actually is. I wouldn't be surprised if they began charging you extra for the bed at some point. But I digress.
When you run into a problem like this, don't take the first "no" for an answer. Don't take the second "no," either. You should have asked for a manager when you were informed about the $50 fee, and if that didn't work, you should have escalated your complaint to Orbitz and requested a manager.
Your greatest weapon may have been your presence in the lobby of the Blue Heron. A guest who refuses to leave, and is speaking on a cell phone about what she feels is a broken promise made by the property, is every hotel's worst nightmare. Believe me, a hotel is extremely conscious of a lobby squatter and it won't take long before it finds a way to make that person happy.
But you fell into a familiar trap during the grievance process. You decided to wait until you returned to try to resolve this, and travel companies are exceptionally skilled at deflecting or ignoring those kinds of complaints.
I contacted Orbitz on your behalf, and it refunded your mysterious $50 fee.

Labor Day weekend translates to the last hurrah of summer, when sun-lovers prepare for a bittersweet farewell to the season.
We’ve rounded up a list of top Labor Day escapes to help you get out and enjoy the great outdoors while the days are still warm, whether your pleasure be lounging on island shores (we've got five to pick from), hiking in the big country of Montana or relaxing waterside at one of the Midwest’s premier lake resorts.
Travelers who prefer a more cultured vacation needn’t fret — we’ve got those covered too. Consider these destinations to stimulate the mind — exotic Reykjavik beckons with its Nordic culture and animated nightlife, while Niagara-on-the-Lake lures visitors with a renowned theater festival just minutes from the famous falls. Or, leave land behind altogether, and take to the high seas onboard a tall ship, with its billowing sails guiding the way through New England.

Great Falls
Follow the trail of Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea into the Old West and spend your holiday weekend under the Big Sky. Picture Brad Pitt in “A River Runs Through It,” knee deep in a rivulet of the Missouri River, rod in hand, the mountains stretching up behind him, all soaring pines and forested hills — that’s Montana for you. Thankfully, the area hasn’t changed much since the historic trek of 1804-06. Today, you can follow the steps of early explorers and venture through river canyons and past white sandstone cliffs until you see the most spectacular site of all: the multi-chute Great Falls. Besides the awesome scenery, there are plenty of activities, like fly-fishing, white-water rafting, kayaking, and canoeing to do; history buffs can also visit museums, go on cultural tours, and partake in educational workshops. The seven Indian reservations around the state also evoke the Lewis and Clark days; you can even visit an old-school Indian village where a rich cultural heritage is still upheld through traditional garb and rituals.

Hawaii
While many head to Hawaii for a warm reprieve during the long winter months, Labor Day — and fall — are actually better times to hit the surf, as they fall outside the Aloha State’s rainy months (which run from November to March). With some of the best beaches in the world, daunting volcanoes, towering mountains, glistening waterfalls and vibrant flowers, the scenery here is nothing short of spectacular, and, at six hours from the West Coast, you can be standing on a lanai in short order, watching the sun set behind the Pacific. So drape a lei around your neck and enjoy a tropical Labor Day holiday filled with lazy days on the beach, surfing, scuba diving, hiking, biking, swimming with dolphins and more.

Iles de la Madeleine
Remote, beautiful, and altogether unique, these stellar islands some 130 miles off the coast of Quebec are the ultimate off-the-path end-of-summer escape. Of the dozen isles that comprise this windswept archipelago (known in English as the Magdalen Islands), only seven are inhabited, six of which are connected only by sand dunes and long grassy reeds. Settled in the 1700s by French-speaking Acadians, many of whom had been in exile in New England, the islands today boast 200 miles of virgin beaches, stupendous fresh seafood and an otherworldly, uncomplicated aura that make them a joy to visit. Given their northern location, summer is, not surprisingly, the best time to go — and with Labor Day marking the end of the season, there's no time like the present. Of all the settlements here, Île du Havre aux Maisons is our favorite, for its colorful houses, charming boardwalk and character-rich pubs and restaurants.

Jekyll Island
Spend the last bit of summer in the former playground of the Rockefellers, Pulitzers and Morgans — Jekyll Island, off the coast of Georgia. This onetime exclusive and rarified blueblood retreat is now easily accessible to everyday vacationers — you just need to drive over a bridge near Brunswick to get there. Once on island, ditch the car — it’s best explored by bike, along trails that run right alongside the white-sand beaches. It’s also a renowned boating, fishing, horseback riding, golfing, tennis-playing and water-park destination, to boot. You can still feel like a millionaire here, mind you, by spending the night at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, a fabulous landmark hotel that dates back to the Gilded Age.

Lake of the Ozarks
Lake escapes and Labor Day go hand and hand, making the magnetism of Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks simply irresistible for the long holiday weekend. Situated in the heart of the Midwest, and lined with numerous waterfront hotels and restaurants that cater to the crowds who pour in by the millions during peak summer months, this manmade lake boasts a shoreline longer than the coast of California — at 1,150 miles — as well as two nearby state parks. Not surprisingly, there are seemingly endless opportunities for golfing, boating, fishing, shopping, bicycling, camping and more. But if you prefer to just kick back, there are few finer ways to lap up the last days of summer’s sunshine than by simply lounging on the pristine stretches of beaches along the shores.

Maine Lighthouse Cruise
For your last blast this summer, take to the high seas, for a unique cruising experience aboard the Mary Day. A 28-passenger windjammer, the ship offers an intimate and adventurous way to explore the coast and lighthouses of Maine, with a six-day Labor Day sailing (departing September 1) leaving from Camden, and allowing guests a relaxing means of taking in the scenery — and even turns at tending the sails or turning the wheel! The tall ship’s billowing sails give off a picturesque, historic appearance, but your onboard amenities are entirely modern — you’ll have hot showers, and perks like an award-winning cook at your service, as well as spacious sundecks and a cozy main saloon.

Niagara-on-the-Lake
This quaint village a short drive from the natural wonder that is Niagara Falls offers a different kind of Labor Day away, what with its equal servings of world-class theater and wine tasting. This delightful town couldn't be more different than its more famous neighbor, either; settled by United States Loyalists in the years following the American Revolution, Niagara-on-the-Lake is loaded with Victorian homes — many of which double as posh B&Bs — and memories of England, epitomized by the daily tea service at the regally appointed Prince of Wales Hotel. Its renowned Shaw Festival showcases the best of George Bernard Shaw and a host of other comedic playrights each summer, while nearby vineyards — some of which produce superb ice wine — are also within easy reach. If you can't make it for Labor Day, a three-day fall visit is also feasible — the festival continues until late November and harvesting season brings new vintages to try.

Reykjavik
While Iceland might not be an obvious choice for an end-of-summer hurrah, this frigid-sounding place is in fact one very “hot” destination. And, at just five-and-a-half hours from points east, it’s one of the more accessible European capitals for a long-weekend getaway. This dynamic Nordic city has lots to offer, too, from cultural institutions, many of which showcase the island’s unique Viking culture, as well as legendary nightlife, with chic pubs and clubs overflowing with sleek patrons. Reykjavik is also close to some outstanding natural attractions, including hot springs, mountains, glaciers, spouting geysers, waterfalls, and bays, where innumerable outdoor activities await. Considering that most of winter is spent in darkness in this northern outpost, Labor Day is also among your last chances to experience some of the country’s renowned summertime Midnight Sun – albeit, only ‘til 8 or 9 p.m.

Santa Catalina Island
Just a high-speed ferry ride from the California coast, fabled Santa Catalina Island (known more commonly just as Catalina Island), makes a perfect end-of-summer Pacific retreat. West-coasters have easy access to this little gem, once owned by chewing-gum mogul, William Wrigley, which boasts a charming town, beautiful beaches, and abundant wildlife. The island’s Avalon Bay is dotted with yachts and fishing boats while the town of Avalon itself is a haven for romantic B&Bs, delightful restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques. With a limited number of cars allowed on the island, most everything is within walking distance of town, but if you want to explore and drive through the rugged hills, you can rent an “autoette” — a cross between a golf cart and a jeep. If you’re feeling seaworthy, hop on a glass-bottom boat ride and marvel at the colorful marine life.

Turks & Caicos
Whether as a place to regroup from too much summer fun or to gear up for the long, vacation-free haul ahead, the Turks & Caicos are tailor-made for a long-weekend beach vacation. At just three hours from the East Coast, the chain is one of the closest Caribbean destinations to the United States, not to mention easier to reach than many points within the country itself. What’s more, the main island, Providenciales, is home to one of the best beaches in the entire Caribbean — Grace Bay. As if that weren’t enough incentive, the islands here are also protected by the third-largest coral-reef system in the world, creating superb turquoise waters for miles. While diving and snorkeling are popular here, there’s not a whole lot else to do but hit the beach with a good book, replenish your sunscreen supplies, and, perhaps, keep an eye out for JoJo, the islands’ resident — and friendly — dolphin.

Looking for travel deals can be quite of a headache, but if you know where to look for them, you'll have a better peace of mind of not over paying. I'm just going to tell you how I look for them.

First off, check out the following two sites:

These two sites basically helps you consolidate your searches into one portal whether it's airfares, hotels, car rentals, or cruises . It'll search multiple websites so that you won't have to search each one individually. Will they always display the lowest prices? No, not all the time but they will give you an idea of what the median prices are going for. These two sites have done me well so far. So give it a shot.

For more hotel rates, Travelaxe is a search engine similar to that of Kayak or Sidestep except that it focuses on hotel rates. One of the best tools to have.

Secondly, check out Travelzoo. See if they have anything that catches your eye. I've listed some Travelzoo deals below to give you an idea of how they work. These are hand picked deals that the Travelzoo staff picked out. Most of them are good. I've had two experiences where I booked through them and was told there was no such deal. However, luckily, the hotel managers still honored those prices.

Third, check out travel sites like Expedia.com, Travelocity.com, Priceline.com, Hotels.com, Hotwire.com and similar sites you can find out there. I prefer Expedia and Priceline. The reason why is because I have found better prices on these two than their competitions, so I would try them first. Priceline is good because you can always bid on your hotels. But remember, once you bid on that one hotel or ticket and you don't get it, you'll have to downgrade to a lower star. Unless you have another credit card handy.
Hint: before bidding, go to betterbidding.com, this will increase your chances of getting a better price for that bid. It's basically a forum of users that will inform you of what they bid and give you an idea what you will be getting or staying for the price you bid it on.

Fourth, if you want to be more thorough shopping for fares, last minute deals are always great. No matter if it's an airfare, hotel, car rentel or cruise, they would rather give you that empty space at a discount than having no one there.

Fifth, when searching for hotels, always call them directly and see if they can give you a better price for it. Same goes to airline companies, always go directly to their site because sometimes they have deals exclusively on their site. You'll be suprised what they'll have to offer. Don't always rely on online travel booking sites. You can save if you do the research. But always always always, be NICE!

Lastly, cruises, check with Costco travels and indepenent travel agents. Costco sometimes have perks and stuff they can give you. Independent travel agents sometimes can give you bulk discounts also.

As for reviews of hotels and places i'm going to, I usually turn to Tripadvisor.com
They are a great forum of opinions.
